Procedure Information

Every individual has valves in the veins that open to allow blood flow to the heart. Varicose veins and spider veins occur when these valves stop working properly and cause the blood to back up and pool in the vein. Aside from aesthetically unpleasing, varicose veins and spider veins are painful.

Patients coming to Hackensack Vein Center for treatment of spider or varicose veins will receive an individualized plan of care from the physician. Whether you are scheduled for a consultation or a procedure for varicose or spider veins, a member of our staff will provide you with individualized instructions prior to your appointment. The initial consultation will include a physical exam and diagnostic ultrasound of your venous system.

Laser Treatment

Treatment of varicose or spider veins may require a laser procedure. After local anesthetic is applied to the region, the physician inserts a small, thin tube called a catheter into the damaged vein. A laser is then threaded into the vein and the beam from the device closes off the vein.

Patients are able to walk immediately following the laser treatment. The physician will review all post-procedure instructions with the patient.

Radio Frequency

Treatment of varicose veins may require a procedure using radio frequency waves. After local anesthetic is applied to the region, the physician inserts a small, thin tube called a catheter into the damaged vein. The physician uses radio frequency waves to close off the vein.

Patients are able to walk immediately following the laser treatment. The physician will review all post-procedure instructions with the patient.

Sclerotherapy

Spider veins may be treated through sclerotherapy. During the sclerotherapy procedure, the sclera therapist injects a special solution into the spider vein. The solution closes off the vein, causing the spider vein to disappear over time.

Patients are able to walk immediately following the laser treatment. The physician will review all post-procedure instructions with the patient.
